Well,

my 2-centi-Euro: SuSE9.0 on an AMD64 running the default KDE desktop
will show a new disk icon as soon as I plug in the USB stick. (double?)
click it and it will get mounted and a file broser opens. That still
doesn't convince me to run kde and let this automount do its work. It
will always pop up k3b whenever I insert a still writable CD/DVD in the
burner which annoys me to no end.  But there you go -- Some prefer
mounting by a manual mount command some prefer clicking....
