OK, I need to organize proofreaders and HTML checkers. Is Rick Moen
around? He's the proofreading coordinator. We don't have an HTML
coordinator yet so I'll have to do it. Here's the jobs in Ben's
words (http://linuxgazette.net/tag/proofreaders-faq.html) and mine:
PROOFREADING:
- There has been much controversy over what constitutes "enough"
proofreading vs "too much", so I'd prefer people who have been
around long enough to understand what we're looking for.
- Fix spelling and grammar. At least get the major errors that
are jarring to native English speakers.
- Reword for clarity, but do not change the author's intent or
intentional style.
- Simplify long or complex sentances so the article is readable
by those with limited English ability. Too many passives = bad.
- If the changes require too much work, refer it back to the editor.
HTML CHECK:
- Should pass HTML Tidy.
- Don't delete the "key: value" headers at the top.
- You may have to surround the document with dummy <HEAD><BODY> tags to get
the checker to accept it. Don't leave these in the final
result, however.
- Get rid of unnecessary styles and fonts. (Word processors are
notorious for putting these in.)
- If the changes require too much work, refer it back to the editor.
Normally these tasks are done separately, but if somebody wants to
take on doing both proofreading/HTML simultaneously, that's also
possible.
I sent two articles to David Richardson for HTML check. The articles
were 'chirico' and 'murray'. Is anybody else working on those articles?
I think somebody else offered to proofread too, a Brian somebody. If so,
please send me your e-mail address coz I deleted it.
Who wants to proofread? If you don't know what "too much" editing is,
just fix the obvious spelling/grammar errors and leave the stylistic
stuff alone.
There are 6-10 articles coming over the next few days that will need
proofreading/HTML check.
