Really? Which xterm and which WM? Under IceWM and using 'xterm', 'rxvt',
and 'rxvt-ml', it does indeed DTRT. The following is pasted from an
xterm with 'vi' running in it and set to 20 characters wide:

This is a test of the emergency copying system. This is only a test. If
this was a real copy-and-paste scenario, this line would be broken every
20 characters.
''
I do recall KDE doing some odd stuff in Konsole, but that had more to do
with character width and using UTF-8. I don't recall ever running into a
line-break problem; in fact, I was quite chuffed when I saw how Linux
terminals (and the console) handled it in just the right way.
