[Movie version of "Colossus: The Forbin Project"]
> Looks like an interesting movie. Is it any good?
For its day, and considering I had the tastes of a precocious
11-year-old at the time, it was very good. D.F. Jones's screenplay
managed to crystallise some of the rampant paranoia about big-iron
computer installations that prevailed at the time. In retrospect,
the way the woman-scientist character gets [mis-, non-] used for plot
purposes was depressingly predictable for a 1969 flick, and, as
http://www.feoamante.com/Movies/ABC/colossus.html points out, the movie
follows the "racial cliche" of any significant black male character
being singled out for being killed -- but, yeah, it was a pretty decent
piece of SciFi.
It was also a bit of a kick to keep seeing exterior shots of Berkeley,
California's "Lawrence Hall of Science" being used as a stand-in for the
Colossus computer centre, after any number of trips to the former.
Ditto for the use of Marin County's Frank Lloyd Wright-designed
government centre building (the "Marin Civic Center") as the
protagonist's place of work in "Gattaca" -- another, and much more
recent movie that was far better than it had any right to be.
