You're welcome :)

Fairly easy actually.
I'm using Gentoo linux not Debian, so instead of apt-ing I get to emerge
software. It's in gentoo's package tree so I just "unmerged" XFree-4.3 from
my laptop and "emerged" X.org. Moved my XF86Config-4 to xorg.conf and started
It *just* worked.
Had some minor annoyances with other packages in the package system that had a
hard dependency on XFree but that is mostly sorted now. They have been
modified to depend on a virtual package X11.
Font location changed with X.org but I'm fairly sure that's not an X.org
requirement but someone took advantage of the switch-over to reorganize the
font setup in Gentoo. Solved that by installing xfs and configuring it for
the new font locations.
Even the binary NVidia drivers work after a recompile, and X feels slightly
faster and more responsive in general.
The only two glitches on my "to-research-and-fix" list left are:
* When the screen is suspended for a longer period of time I can't get it to
unsuspend normally. I have to change to one of the other virtual consoles
and back to get it redrawn.
* Ocaissionally after the screensaver has kicked in it comes back with the
screen shifted up half a screen, leaving me with the taskbar in the middle
of my screen and the mouse-pointer on the original coordinates.
Forcing a redraw by switching virtual consoles "works around" this one as
Sadly I've been too busy to do any real research on it.
Any tips would be most welcome :)
Remote displays over ssh etc. work. This gave me some trouble because it comes
with a default policy to deny external clients access to the xserver. This
behaviour was not changed by running 'xhost +' but had to be changed in the
startup scripts. (also more a distro-issue than a x.org issue)
The look on the face of a visiting friend with an apple powerbook when my
linux desktop appeared on it's screen was definitly worth the trouble :)
I was planning on optimizing my setup and solving outstanding issues if / when
work slows down a bit next week.
