You could do what I do, and just snip the relevant wires in the cable so
that the monitor probing cannot take place....

Top-level will (or should) recurse down. You an of course, just cd to a
directory and type: "make", which will do its thing. Remember that if you
have already compiled things, then you'll have to do: "make clean" first.
