If you mean "Can I install a newer version of a package over an older
version?" the answer is "It depends, but probably yes." If none of the
file names have changed, the new files will simply overwrite the old
ones.

But I prefer to use a package like "stow" (The software Thomas
recommended) for source installs, simply because things can get ugly
when you try to do what you're trying to do now.
