I didn't see the context of this letter, but Gentoo got the devfs
religion just before udev appeared.  So for a failsafe udev operation,
leave the devfs tweaks alone, don't set the kernel config option to
automatically mount devfs, and leave the static /dev files in place
as a fallback in case you someday have problems with both udev and devfs.
Then you can enjoy udev while the Gentoo developers get around to
eliminating the devfs tweaks.
