You were not particularly clear.

Is this what a typical entry in the NIS password database
lookss like?
	kapil:<gobble-de-gook>:1000:1002:Kapil:/home/kapil:/bin/bash

Is this what the symbolic links look like?
	/home/kapil -> /mnt/home/kapil

If this is so then your system should work.
