I "cheat" by using Midnight Commander, myself. It can define execution,
etc. by file associations (like Wind0ws), file types (a la Unix),
regexes, directories, include directives, and default. You also get up
to four different actions for each of the above: View (invoked by the F3
key), Edit (F4), Open (the Enter key), and Drop (drag and drop, which I
admit I have never used; it probably works only in GMC, the graphical
version.) You can also define other action keys... something I've never
found a need for.
I've been using MC since my very first days with Linux, and if I have to
spend anything more than a couple of hours with a Unix machine, it's one
of the first things (along with Vim) that I download and install.
