I guess a W2 vs a 1099 makes a huge difference.  I never really found it 
so, but maybe that's just me.


Either way, the employer signs the check.  Hey, waddaya know, even as a 
consultant/contractor, you have an employer... he's called the customer!


The only difference is who Uncle Sam get HIS money from.


footnote for our non-US readers:

A W2 form is what the Internal Revenue Service (tax man) get's  as a 
statement of taxes withheld by an employer.  A form 1099 is what they 
get when you're expected to withhold your own taxes and make regular 
payments yourself.
