Pete --

I have a very favourable impression, overall, of Gentoo[1] from my
experience getting it going on my old G3 iBook. Although it took
a while to finish, it gave me an amazingly good, cutting-edge system.
What most impressed me were the really good documentation, especially
the handbook, and (though I didn't need to post there) the help forums.

So, I would encourage you to give it a try again. If you don't already
have it, try starting with the 2005.1 "Universal Installation" CD image
for your platform, which starts you out with a full set of "stage3" files,
thereby getting you up and running relatively quickly (for Gentoo ;->).

[1] Yes, you did hear that from the Debian guy.
