You don't see the snake?  It must be wishful thinking, like the black
sunglasses in _The Restaurant at the End of the Universe_.  These
aren't spy sunglasses, they're a panic inhibitor.  You put them on and
they turn opaque at any sign of danger.  It's modelled after the [some
species] of animal that assumes that if it can't see you, you can't
see it, so you're not a threat.
