Yes, I know about that.  My xorg.conf doesn't have it.  Sorry, I meant
to mention that before.  But I did find another thing wrong in
xorg.conf, and that fixed the problem.

My original Modes line was:

Modes "1600x1200" "1400x1050" "1280x960" "1280x800" "1280x1024"
"1152x864" "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

I had moved the large sizes to the end so they wouldn't be default:

Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
1600x1200" "1400x1050" "1280x960" "1280x800"

But because the large sizes were present it set the "virtual"  the
largest size.  I removed all the larger sizes, and voila, 1280x1024
virtual == 1280x1024 actual.

Modes  "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

I remember encountering this years ago when I first dealt with X-windows.
