The first I heard of durian I *think* was a friend of mine writing a
filksong "who let the durian into the spaceship?" ... later someone else
hearing the same commented that they understood now, at some high end place
they'd sen a little sign on the window "durian prepared elsewhere". You
wouldn't expect window signs on a class establishment, but it was a sign of
high class indedd, not only they had the dish, but you should be guaranteed
not to suffer any of its prep. If it had been prepared onsite I suppose
it'd have a hazmat mark...

*rofl* One could say the same of cheese. Taking the Suzanne Vega style of
description, liquid from a warm place, mixed in a cold place, split into
two places, dance a merry way. set aside and feed, let the critters
breed... pour the stuff in wax, seal it up for tax, send across the sea...
Every culture has its completely inedible and cruel food that nontheless is
ritualistically eaten. Or at least that's my suspicion. Likewise there are
many fine and enjoyable foods which would easily make the gentlebeings of
its culture squirm and gain nightmares if they consider how these things
were made.

*snicker* I'f I'm an unwell kitty my brains don't work and it's hard to be a
sick puppy...
