As I recall, the author used a shell script to prod the device.

Well, Jan-Benedict Glaw volunteered - but I haven't actually seen any
result from it, despite prodding him a couple of times. I guess he's
been busy, or something. Your offer is gratefully appreciated, since my
C is too rusty to be useful except in trivial cases.
