...for lack of a package maintainer, whose root cause I don't know for
sure, but being antiquated and requiring odd gtk 1.x libs may have
something to do with it, not to mention highly questionable licensing
(GPLed source code, but tightly integrated to proprietary codecs).

"audacious" (gtk2-based) might be a better bet.  Or xmms2, though that's
somewhat of a different thing.

Or, if you're absolutely determined you want xmms, build the package 
yourself:
