I don't see the smiley for that comment - I believe some of his 
contempories considered him anything but.

That comment may have been a dig at the diminutive Hooke, who he was at 
odds with at the time.

All that not withstanding, the quote is very apt to all in the Open Source 
and Free software field. Like you I'm familiar enough with sendmail to not 
feel the pressure to move (I remember when it was possibly the only Free 
choice) - and to stand in awe at the brain that conceived the raw matching 
rules! Ages ago I even came across a config file to act as a calculator, 
this may be it...
